Trump Nominates Influential Trucking Official Derek Barrs to Lead FMCSA
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has nominated Derek Barrs from Florida to become the next administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), according to Senate documents released on Tuesday.
Barrs, recognized for his extensive experience in transportation safety, was appointed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to the School Board of Flagler County in October. Barrs is a notable figure in the trucking industry, being a member of the American Trucking Associations’ Law Enforcement Advisory Board and the Florida Trucking Association (FTA).
FTA President and CEO Alix Miller praised Barrs as “an instrumental leader in the trucking industry,” emphasizing his potential to tackle today’s complex challenges. Miller stated, “His proven leadership and understanding of both public safety and transportation operations make him an ideal candidate to guide FMCSA.”
If confirmed by the Senate, Barrs would be the ninth administrator to lead the agency, created in 2000. The prior acting Administrator, Adrienne Camire, left the position abruptly after less than two weeks.
Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association President Todd Spencer commented, “We look forward to working with [Barrs] in advancing the priorities of small business truckers across America, including fighting freight fraud, rolling back unnecessary regulations, and closing regulatory loopholes to ensure the safest truck drivers remain in the industry.” Spencer further urged for a swift confirmation process.
This nomination comes at a pivotal time, as the FMCSA's role in ensuring road safety and industry regulation continues to evolve, especially with ongoing developments in Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and the increasing use of dashcams by service providers.
Upcoming Events
The FMCSA administrator traditionally has a presence at the Mid-America Trucking Show, which will commence shortly in Louisville, Ky. FMCSA has not yet confirmed which agency official will be speaking on this year’s panel scheduled for March 27.
