Pioneering Autonomous Trucking: Earl Adams Joins Plus
Autonomous trucking company Plus has announced a significant addition to its team: former Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Deputy Administrator Earl Adams. With his expertise, Plus aims to enhance public affairs, boost safety advocacy, and navigate the evolving regulatory landscape in the autonomous trucking industry.
David Liu, CEO and co-founder of Plus, expressed the strategic importance of this hire: "After nearly a decade on our autonomous journey, we are on the brink of commercializing autonomous trucks. Earl’s unmatched experience in transportation policy and his ability to connect diverse stakeholder groups will be instrumental to the next phase of our growth."
A New Leadership Role
Adams steps into the shoes of his predecessor, Wiley Deck, another former FMCSA deputy administrator. Adams shared his enthusiasm, stating, "I am excited to join Plus and work closely with partners, regulators, and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth path to safely launch autonomous trucks and make our roads safer for everyone."
Plus prides itself on its collaborations with global commercial vehicle giants like Traton Group, Hyundai, and Iveco, positioning itself as the leading autonomy partner. Adams is set to play a crucial role in fortifying these partnerships.
Regulatory Expertise
During his tenure at FMCSA under former administrator Robin Hutcheson, Adams led the charge in drafting safety regulations for autonomous commercial vehicles. He was instrumental as a liaison to the transport secretary’s autonomous working group and served as FMCSA’s chief counsel.
Before joining Plus, Adams was a partner at the law firm Hogan Lovells, where he led initiatives within the firm's autonomous vehicle working group.
The Biden Administration's Vision
In conversations with industry insiders, Adams emphasized that the Biden administration sought to "leverage technology to get safer outcomes." He reflected on his efforts to establish essential regulatory guardrails in the face of rapid industry developments.
