CSX Resumes Rail Service in North Carolina

Freight cars are once again rolling through the western North Carolina town of Spruce Pine. This development follows CSX Transportation crews as they reopened approximately 2 miles of the Clinchfield Railroad route north of Spruce Pine, providing crucial access to a local freight customer. CSX officials confirmed the line’s restoration in a video shared on LinkedIn.

Importance of the Quartz Corp.

The restored rail line now enables the delivery and removal of railcars from The Quartz Corp., a leading producer of high-purity quartz utilized in the semiconductor industry. This company’s operations were significantly affected by the extensive flooding resulting from Hurricane Helene on September 27, 2024. Reports indicate that quartz from this region accounts for up to 70% of the global supply for semiconductor use.

Ongoing Challenges After the Hurricane

The railroad’s Blue Ridge Subdivision, which extends north of the customer’s spur through the Nolichucky River Gorge to Erwin, Tennessee, remains non-operational. Crews are diligently working on reinforcing the new roadbed and reconstructing a bridge at Poplar, North Carolina. As of now, no official timeline has been provided for the reopening of this segment.

For the interim, revenue freight bound for Spruce Pine is being rerouted from Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Bostic Yard in Bostic, North Carolina. Meanwhile, rock trains and maintenance-of-way equipment have successfully gained access to the areas still under reconstruction.

Local Progress and Future Prospects

Simultaneously, CSX restored service to Spruce Pine, initiating its first work train across the Chestoa Bridge over the Nolichucky River near Unaka Springs, Tennessee. This notable steel bridge had accumulated a significant amount of debris from the unprecedented flooding during Hurricane Helene.

Trains News Wire is actively seeking further updates from CSX regarding the anticipated reopening of the rail line through the Nolichucky River Gorge.

FMCSA Active ELD Revoke List and the Importance of Compliance

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of commercial motor vehicles on American roads. As part of their oversight, they mandate the use of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to monitor drivers’ hours of service (HOS) and ensure compliance with federal regulations. However, not all ELDs meet the necessary compliance standards. When a device no longer complies with FMCSA regulations or fails to meet performance standards, it is placed on the **FMCSA ELD Revoked List**. Below, we explore some of the key reasons why an ELD might be revoked and provide a table of current revoked devices.
