End of an Era: Auto Hauler Jack Cooper Shuts Down
Auto hauler Jack Cooper, a powerhouse in the transportation industry, has announced its closure after an incredible 97-year journey, primarily due to losing its two biggest contracts. This comes as a shock to many within the trucking community, who have long been familiar with its importance and history.
In a sincere and emotional letter to employees, CEO Sarah Amico, who also stands as the principal owner of this family-led enterprise, shared, “It is with extraordinary sadness that we are writing to let you know that after 97 years in business, Jack Cooper will be closing our doors in the near future.”
A Sudden Unraveling
The downfall seemed abrupt. At the close of 2024, the outlook for 2025 appeared normal. However, this quickly reversed when Ford Motor Co. invoked a termination clause at the beginning of 2025, ending their long-term partnership with Jack Cooper.
This development was a substantial blow, compounded by General Motors' subsequent decision to cease their association with Jack Cooper. GM's shift came despite ongoing negotiations and Jack Cooper's history as a reputable partner, earning accolades like “Supplier of the Year” multiple times over the last fifteen years.
Impact and Response
The situation escalated when GM instructed its teams to halt loading of vehicles onto Jack Cooper trucks, signaling an abrupt end to their business relationship. According to Amico, efforts to negotiate with GM were met in good faith but ultimately fell short.
“Given the loss of our Ford revenue and General Motors’ unilateral decision, Jack Cooper’s management and Board of Directors have no choice but to ask that our employees not return to work, unless contacted by management,” Amico stated in her letter, noting that a small number of staff would remain to facilitate the shutdown.
Broader Repercussions
This closure has drawn attention beyond the immediate logistics sector. The dispute with Ford prompted involvement from U.S. Senators who sought clarity from Ford over the contract's abrupt termination. Despite these efforts, the outcome remained unchanged.
Amico reflected on the company’s legacy, “For nearly a century, Jack Cooper has set the standard in finished vehicle logistics. We have been proudly Women-Owned, union and family-operated.” Despite the unfortunate end, the legacy and contributions of Jack Cooper to the industry remain significant.
This unfolding story remains under observation, as the trucking industry digests the ramifications of Jack Cooper’s closure.
