Understanding Diagnostic Ports

Older diagnostic port standard found in heavy-duty trucks manufactured from 2000-2006. Gray colored port typically located near the driver's seat.

9-PIN (J1939)

Standard diagnostic port for heavy-duty trucks from 2006-2014. Black or green colored port with 9-pin configuration.

16-PIN OBDII

Modern diagnostic standard used in newer heavy-duty trucks (2014+) and all light/medium-duty vehicles (2008+).

Compatibility Guide

Heavy-Duty Trucks

2000-2005: 6-PIN (J1708) port
2006-2013: 9-PIN (J1939) port
2014+: 16-PIN OBDII port
Note: Kenworth/Peterbilt switched to OBDII in 2019

Light/Medium-Duty

2008+: 16-PIN OBDII port
• Includes pickup trucks, vans, day cabs
• Compatible with diesel and gas engines

Important Notes

2017-2018 Kenworth/Peterbilt: Requires 9-PIN adapter
Freightliner 2020: Uses 9-PIN (J1939), NOT 16-PIN OBDII
Volvo/Mack: Engine type affects port compatibility
Port Standards: J1939 and OBDII are different and incompatible
