US Weekly Rail Traffic Surges Past 2023 Levels
WASHINGTON — As we move closer to wrapping up another year, there is exciting news in the realm of U.S. rail traffic. For the week ending December 21, 2024, rail traffic in the United States remained significantly ahead of 2023 levels.
According to statistics from the Association of American Railroads, the overall rail traffic for the specified week reached an impressive 523,912 carloads and intermodal units. This figure marks a tremendous 7.8% increase from the same week in the previous year. Notably, this includes 230,857 carloads, reflecting a slight rise of 0.3%, and an impressive 293,055 containers and trailers, which represent a striking 14.6% increase compared to the corresponding week in 2023.
Taking a broader look at the entire year, through 51 weeks, carload traffic in 2024 shows a slight decline of 3% in comparison to 2023. However, this dip is offset by a substantial 9.3% increase in intermodal volume, leading to an overall increase of 3.4% compared to the same period last year.
The encouraging trend in North America adds another layer of positivity. Among nine reporting railroads spanning the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, overall traffic counted 338,812 carloads (down 0.6% from last year) and 375,064 intermodal units (up 10.5%). This results in a total of 713,876 carloads and intermodal units, marking a 4.9% increase from the same week in 2023. Year-to-date volume in North America is up by 2.3% compared to the initial weeks of 2023, which includes a 1% decline in Canada and a 2.8% rise in Mexico.
This week's statistics were released later than usual due to the Christmas holiday, and looking ahead, next week’s figures will also be delayed, set to release on January 3, 2025, because of the New Year's holiday.
The progress in rail traffic offers promising insights that not only reflect a gradual economic rebound but also highlight shifts in transportation preferences and logistics strategies. Businesses and logistics service providers should take note of these changing dynamics as an opportunity for growth and adaptation.
