Running on Ice: How New Drug Formulas Could Revolutionize Cold Chain Logistics
Recent advancements in protein-based medicines, thanks to researchers at Pennsylvania State University, have led to the development of a new oil-based drug formulation that remains stable despite temperature changes. Traditionally, protein-based drugs were water-based, requiring stringent cold chain conditions. This innovation could extend to vital medications like insulin, certain antibodies, and viral vaccines, thus significantly reducing the need for stringent temperature controls.
All thawed out
With cold chain logistics accounting for around 80% of overall costs in medicine, this new drug formulation is a potential game-changer. It promises affordability and could alleviate some pressure on the cold chain as the market shifts towards more customized gene therapies, which demand rigorous temperature-controlled logistics compared to conventional drugs.
Ongoing research aims to determine these drugs' stability and efficacy when stored without refrigeration, for periods such as three months. This innovation heralds a promising start in transforming the pharmaceutical supply chain landscape.
Temperature Checks
In another exciting development, Cryoport has introduced its Cryoport Express® Cryogenic HV3 Shipping System, tailored for air cargo. Unlike traditional palletized shipments, this system can secure goods within its unit, fitting snugly even on narrow-bodied aircraft.
According to Cryoport, the HV3 enhances mobility with its robust wheels and integrated handle, boosts safety for handlers, and improves storage efficiency at clinical sites. The system's integrated condition and location monitoring ensure constant oversight, maintaining temperature at a chilling -150°C or below.
Food and Drug
Food recalls are increasingly frequent due to pathogens like Salmonella and Listeria, as voluntary recalls transition to mandatory actions. As of October 2024, the FDA reported 1,908 recalls in the food and cosmetic sectors, mainly affecting larger brands.
In response, the FDA has heightened food safety protocols, particularly for fresh and frozen berries. This strategy emphasizes sanitation, proper worker hygiene, and maintaining virus-free conditions in farming and processing operations.
Cold Chain Lanes
Seattle's logistics market demonstrates the pressures on cold supply chains. Reefer outbound tender rejections surged from 8.98% to 19.61% within a week, while volumes dropped by over 25%. As capacity tightens, spot rates rise, highlighting the need for adaptive strategies in freight management.
