Mastering Business Deals: Insights from a Hostage Negotiator
It's time for another engaging book review. This month, we're diving into Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss. First published in 2016, this book has become a staple in the sales and business world. While it promised a riveting journey into negotiation tactics, for me, it ranks a solid 3.5 stars.
Tactical Wisdom from an FBI Negotiator
Voss uses his experiences as an FBI hostage negotiator to deliver captivating real-world stories and actionable techniques like tactical empathy and mirroring. Each chapter introduces a new negotiation technique through scenarios from his career, business situations, and personal stories, providing a comprehensive understanding.
Intriguing Yet Repetitive
While the hostage negotiation tales are thrilling, they don't always translate well to everyday business negotiations. Techniques like the accusation audit are insightful but not universally applicable. The main takeaways include:
- Mirror Them: Echo the client's question back to them curiously to buy time, e.g., "How did I land on that price?"
- Calibrated Questions: Redirect instead of justifying. Ask, "What do you see as a fair price?"
- Label Emotions: Acknowledge and diffuse tension by labeling emotions, e.g., "It sounds like you think my offer is way off."
- Drop the ‘Fair’ Bomb: Invoke fairness to make them justify their position, e.g., "What makes that number feel unfair to you?"
- Go Full Chris Voss: Challenge them gently with, "How am I supposed to do that?"
The book's repetition detracts from its effectiveness, with concepts reiterated multiple times, assuming readers might forget.
Conclusion
If sales is your field, you'll likely glean more from Never Split the Difference as it offers valid techniques to close deals. It's engaging but not the ultimate guide for all negotiators. Ideally, a book solely on hostage negotiation stories would be a thrilling read!
Place this book on your to-read list but don't rush. Despite being nearly nine years old, it remains relevant. Currently, it's available on Kindle Unlimited.
